Fundamental Skills in Media Arts and Design I (SMAD 201): Gained experience with Photoshop and InDesign
Fundamental Skills in Media Arts and Design II (SMAD 202): gained experience with GarageBand and iMovie. We used a wiki with the class to receive assignments and attachments.
News Writing (SMAD 210): In this course, I got to conduct my first interviews with subjects and write articles based on them.
News Editing (SMAD 220): learned about grammar, punctuation, the news room and used the 2009 AP Stylebook as our reference.
Practicum in Health Education – wrote for the publication “Potty Mouth” and gained experience writing for a large audience
Culture By Design (SMAD 301): Gained knowledge about how new media is changing our culture
Feature Writing (SMAD 311): Gained a more in-depth experience interviewing the public, writing articles and researching topics I am passionate about.
New Media Journalism (SMAD 322): Gained experience blogging, Twitter-ing and using LinkedIn. I learned the importance of these new social media tools in the workplace.
Communication & Information Technology (SMAD 341): Gained experience creating and updating blogs, learned about Web 2.0 and new media technologies.
Mass Communication Law (SMAD 370): Learned about the laws that regulate journalism in today’s market.
Media History (SMAD 372): Learned about the history of newspapers, magazines and advertising and how they led us to where we are today.
Traditional Grammar (ENG 309): Learned how to write and diagram complex sentences.
Advanced Composition (ENG 396): Gained experience writing weekly opinion essays about short stories and essays we have read.

SMAD 201 Magazine Project
- This Southern Woman magazine cover for was created for the Fundamental Skills in Media Arts and Design course. After learning about proximity, alignment and the other magazine objectives, I created this magazine cover using Photoshop. This was my favorite project for the course because it allowed us to be creative and create a magazine for a specific audience that interested us.
- My spring 2010 feature writing class compiled our individual stories to create one story about Harrisonburg’s Rockingham Memorial Hospital move to the new hospital. The story was featured on Harrisonburg’s South Main website.
- While interning at Northern Virginia Magazine, many of my articles have been published online and in print.
- This is a travel article for Northern Virginia Magazine about the Arlington, Va. area.

- Member of Delta Gamma fraternity– attend weekly meetings, volunteer at nursing home two/three times per month, participate and coach AnchorSplash philanthropy. Won the “Best of the Best” Sister Award from Fraternity and Sorority Life (2010).
- Director of Scholarship for Delta Gamma fraternity (January 2010-December 2010)– I monitored all sisters’ GPAs; awarded sisters with good scholarship; arranged study hours/tutoring for those who need extra help; planned, hosted and executed a 3.0+ GPA Scholarship Dinners for sisters who achieved a 3.0+ GPA; active member of the officer nominating committee for the following semester; help operated the JMU chapter of Delta Gamma.
